Corenet’s One Big Day was held today in London, and took you back to the future. Looking at:
* Working and living and how the two are merging or have already merged.
* Developments in technology and society that may dictate how we will live and work in 25 years’ time
Unpredictability is the foundation on which the fear of change is built on. But a lot of organisations just don’t realise what’s at stake here. It’s not whether they’re going to be successful but whether they will survive. Rather than the workplace just being a place to house your people the environment needs to facilitate inspiration and innovation through a deeper level of thinking because the workplace can actually augment people’s interaction and collaboration.
The new offices for Costa Coffee at hospitality giant Whitbread, is a modern workplace designed by Squaredot which was intentionally designed to foster collaboration and tacit knowledge exchange. Research shows that well-designed workplaces can facilitate serendipitous collisions of people and ideas, accelerating the flow of ideas and innovation. Opening up the hallways, so people can easily stop and talk, and focussing on social spaces in publicly accessible areas, maximizes knowledge exchange, and are some examples of a work environment that encourages social activity and collaboration.
