Home to some of the region's most ambitious businesses, Bristol & Bath Science Park connects new ventures with world-class facilities and research expertise. Its success depends on something less tangible than square footage: a genuine culture of ideas, connection and exchange between the people who work there.
Challenge
The park's community is as varied as it gets, with global brands sitting alongside early-stage start-ups and researchers alongside visiting partners. Squaredot was asked to find one space capable of serving all of them at once: somewhere that could hold the weight of the park's ambitions for innovation while still feeling personal to whoever walked through the door.
Approach
We started by watching how the atrium was actually being used, not how it was designed to be used. That distinction shaped everything that followed. Once we understood the real rhythm of the space, focused mornings, social lunches, spontaneous meetings, we built around it, rather than imposing a single fixed idea of what the space should be.
Transformation
What emerged is a space built for contradiction: quiet enough for deep, individual work, open enough for a chance conversation to turn into a collaboration. Rather than choosing between the two, the atrium now holds both, shifting to suit whoever's using it that day.
