A head office should reflect the business it belongs to, but SCC's outdated, disconnected James House had become the opposite of the modern, collaborative company they were.

Employees felt unmotivated, frustrated, and cut off from their colleagues in a building that no longer served them.
Challenge
James House needed more than a refurbishment; it needed a complete rethink. A Workplace Analysis Study revealed just how much the surroundings were affecting staff, exposing cracks in both the infrastructure and the culture it was meant to support.
Approach
Rather than starting from scratch, we brought the building back to its roots before rebuilding it better than before. Sustainability sat at the centre of the approach from day one, with thermal efficiency exceeding regulations and close collaboration with SCC's internal sustainability team to meet SKA and Fitwel rating standards.
Transformation
The refurbished James House now encourages collaboration, innovation and communication throughout. Furniture is 99% recyclable, old workstations were donated to charity rather than discarded, and the design considered the wider community too, offering a sign of confidence that inner-city urban zones can be thriving hubs for business and opportunity. These ESG considerations helped the project become a finalist in the BCO awards.
